Steel Material Description

GOST 8732-78 is a Russian standard for hot-worked seamless steel pipes. Grade 20 (Cт20) is the carbon steel grade under this specification, with defined chemical composition and mechanical properties. Wall thickness tolerance is +12.5% / -15% for certain sizes.

It is commonly matched with Chinese 20# quality carbon structural steel. Depending on usage, 20# seamless pipes follow GB/T 699, GB/T 8163 or GB 3087 for structure, fluid delivery and low-medium pressure boiler service.

The two grades have similar chemical makeup and are widely accepted as equivalents. Even so, small differences remain in element limits and residual trace contents.

Their strength levels are close, while Chinese standard 20# shows slightly better ductility (elongation) in some cases.
